Oil and gas operators across the Permian Basin, Texas, New Mexico and U.S. report fewer active oil and gas drilling rigs this week as the new year begins. As of Jan. 9, Permian’s count was 244 rigs (down 3 in the past week, down 60 or 19.74 percent from 304 a year ago). Also, there were 230 rigs in Texas (down 1 in the past week, down 52 or 18.44 percent from 282 a year ago) and 100 in New Mexico (down 1 in the past week, down 3 in the past year).
Across the U.S. as of Jan. 9, there were 544 rigs (down 2 in the past week, down 40 or 6.85 percent from 584 a year ago). The national count included 124 gas-directed rigs (down 1 in past week, up 24 in past year) and 409 oil-directed rigs (down 3 in past week, down 71 or 14.80 percent in past year).
Haynesville is No. 2 among regions with 41 rigs (down 1 in past week) followed closely by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 40 (unchanged). Others include Williston with 28 rigs (down 1) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged). Among states, Oklahoma is third with 43 rigs (unchanged) followed by Louisiana with 40 (down 3) and North Dakota with 26 (down 1)
