New Mexico adds 2 rigs to match 2023 high of 113 active drilling rigs

New Mexico added 2 drilling rigs in the past week to match its 2023 high with 113 rigs, but rig counts in Permian Basin, Texas and U.S. continued to decline.  Baker Hughes said as of Aug. 4 there were 314 rigs in Texas (down 8 in past week, down 59 in past year), 329 in Permian (down 5 in past week, down 18 in past year) and 659 in U.S. (down 5 in past week, down 105 in past year).  New Mexico’s count is up from 104 a year ago.

Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 50 rigs (down 1 in past week, down 12 in past year) followed by Oklahoma with 39 (unchanged in past week, down 25 in past year) and North Dakota with 35 (unchanged in past week, down 2 in past year).  Eagle Ford is No. 2 among regions with 54 (down 1 in past week, down 18 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 44 (unchanged in past week, down 25 in past year), Williston with 35 (unchanged in past week) and Marcellus with 33 (down 1 in past week).

Lea County (up 5 to 64 rigs in past week) and Eddy in New Mexico (down 3 to 47) lead Permian Basin followed by Martin with 41 (unchanged), Midland with 32 (down 2), Reeves with 26 (down 6), Loving with 22 (down 1), Ward with 19 (up 1) and Glasscock with 10 (down 1).
