Permian Basin added 2 drilling rigs in the past week while Texas and U.S. each declined in rig count, according to the weekly report of Jan. 5 from Baker Hughes.  Permian now has 311 active rigs (353 year ago).  There were 308 rigs in Texas (309 previous week, 378 year ago) and 621 in U.S. (622 week ago, 772 year ago).  New Mexico reported 97 rigs for the second straight week (100 year ago).  Kansas was the only state reporting additional rigs last week, and Permian and Mississippian were the only regions reporting additional rigs.

Eddy, N.M., is the new Permian leader after adding 4 rigs to reach a new count of 50 while previous leader Lea, N.M., declined by 4 to 44.  Other basin leaders include Martin at 36 (down 1 in past week), Reeves at 32 (unchanged) and Midland with 26 (down 1).  Also, Loving has 21 rigs (down 1), Upton and Ward each have 13, and Glasscock has 10.

Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 53 (53 previous week, 71 year ago) followed by Haynesville with 43 (44 in previous week, 69 year ago), Williston with 32 (32 previous week, 42 year ago) and Marcellus with 28 (28 previous week, 38 year ago).  Oklahoma is now No. 3 among states with 44 (44 previous week, 66 year ago) followed by Louisiana with 42 (42 previous week, 66 year ago) and North Dakota with 31 (31 previous week, 39 year ago).
