Permian Basin, Texas, New Mexico and U.S. each reported an increase in count of active oil and gas drilling rigs in the past week. Baker Hughes said as of Feb. 23 there were 314 rigs in Permian (312 previous week, 353 year ago), 301 in Texas (299 previous week, 370 year ago) and 102 in New Mexico (101 previous week, 106 year ago). Also, there were 626 active rigs in U.S. as of Feb. 23 – up 5 from 621 the previous week, but down 127 from 753 a year ago.
Louisiana remains third among states with 45 rigs (unchanged in past week, down from 64 year ago) followed by Oklahoma with 44 (42 previous week, 62 year ago) and North Dakota with 32 (unchanged in past week, down from 41 year ago). Eagle Ford in south Texas remains No. 2 among regions with 52 rigs (unchanged in previous week, down from 71 year ago) followed by Haynesville with 43 (unchanged from previous week, down from 68 year ago), Williston with 34 (unchanged in previous week, down from 42 year ago) and Marcellus with 31 (unchanged from previous week, down from 36 year ago).
Eddy County, N.M., add a rig to maintain its Permian leadership with 55 rigs. Another New Mexico county, Lea, is runner-up with 44 (unchanged) followed by Martin with 38 (up 1), Reeves with 26 (down 2) and Loving with 24 (up 1). Other basin rig counts are Upton with 20 (up 1), Midland with 17 (down 2 as its slide continues), Reagan with 14, Ward with 13, Howard with 12 and Culberson with 10 (up 2).
