U.S. rig count declines for third straight week, Texas adds 7 rigs in past week

Baker Hughes’ count of active drilling rigs in the U.S. declined as of April 5 for the third consecutive week.  It’s the first three-week decline since September-October 2023.  Baker Hughes said there were 620 rigs in U.S. (down 1 in the past week, down 131 in past year).  The U.S. count is down 9 during the three-week slump.  Also as of April 5, there were 317 rigs in Permian Basin (up 1 in past week, down 36 in past year), 297 in Texas (up 7 in past week, down 80 in past year) and 108 in New Mexico (down 3 in past week, up 5 in past year).

Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 44 (unchanged in past week, down 14 in past year) followed by Louisiana with 39 (down 2 in past week, down 17 in past year) and North Dakota with 32 (unchanged in past week, down 8 in past year).  Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 56 rigs (up 1 in past week, down 14 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 34 (down 2 in past week, down 32 in past year), Williston with 34 and Marcellus with 30.

Eddy (down 3 to 58) and Lea (unchanged at 47) counties in New Mexico continue to lead Permian Basin.  Other leaders include Martin with 37 (up 2 in past week), Loving with 23 (unchanged) and Reeves with 27 (up 2).  Midland reported 21 rigs (up 1) followed by Upton with 17 (down 4), Reagan with 14 (up 1), Ward with 13 (unchanged), Howard with 12 (down 1) and Culberson with 11 (unchanged).
