It was another week of falling drilling rig counts in Permian Basin, Texas and U.S., according to Baker Hughes in its weekly report of June 21. There were 308 rigs in Permian Basin (down 1 in past week, down 33 from 341 a year ago), 282 in Texas (down 3 in past week, down 63 from 345 a year ago) and 588 in U.S. (down 2 in past week, down 94 from 682 a year ago). New Mexico’s count was unchanged at 108 (up 2 from year ago). The last rig count increase in Permian Basin was 9 weeks ago April 19 when the count was up 2 to a 2024 high of 318.
Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 40 rigs (up 1 in past week, down 7 in past year) followed by Oklahoma with 35 (down 2 in past week, down 7 in past year) and North Dakota with 34 (up 2 in past week, down 1 in past year). Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 50 rigs (down 1 in past week, down 10 in past year) followed by Haynesville in east Texas and Louisiana with 36 (up 1 in past week, down 14 in past year), Williston with 35 (up 1 in past week, unchanged in past year) and Marcellus with 25 (unchanged in past week, down 10 in past year).
New Mexico counties of Eddy (53 rigs) and Lea (51) continue to lead Permian (both unchanged last week). Also in the top 5 are Martin (down 2 to 30), Reeves (unchanged at 23) and Loving (unchanged at 22). Others include Midland with 18 (down 2), Reagan with 17 (unchanged), Upton with 15 (unchanged), Howard with 12 (up 3 in past week) and Ward with 10 (unchanged).
