Texas again only major producing state to add drilling rigs in past week

October 1, 2024 by PBOG

For the second straight week, Texas was the only major producing state to add oil and gas drilling rigs.  Houston-based Baker Hughes said as of Sept. 27 there were 277 active rigs in Texas (up 1 from 276 previous week, down 27 from 304 year ago).  Also, there were 306 rigs in Permian Basin (down 1 from 307 previous week, down 6 from 312 year ago), 104 in New Mexico (down 2 from 106 previous week, up 2 from 102 year ago) and 587 in U.S. (down 1 from 588 previous week, down 36 from 623 year ago).

Midland County and Reeves County were the only major producing counties in Permian Basin to add a rig in the past week.  Lea (down 1 to 51) and Eddy (down 1 to 49) counties in New Mexico lead the Permian Basin followed by Martin with 31 (down 1), Reeves with 30 (up 1) and Midland with 25 (up 1).  Other basin leaders include Loving with 19, Reagan and Upton each with 14, and Howard with 10.

Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 48 rigs followed by Williston with 34, Haynesville with 33 and Marcellus with 24 (all four unchanged in the past week).  Louisiana and Oklahoma each has 41 rigs, and North Dakota reported 33.
