Mewbourne Oil climbs to second in list of top 100 private oil and gas producers

July 1, 2025 by PBOG Leave a Comment

Tyler-based Mewbourne Oil Co. moved to second in Enverus’ latest list of the most prolific 100 private oil and gas producers in the U.S. based on gross operated production, well count and rig movements in 2024.  Mewbourne, founded in 1965, coordinates its operations in Permian Basin from offices in Midland and Hobbs, N.M.

Continental Resources, whose primary region is Rockies, continued to rank No. 1 in Enverus’ list of privates followed by runner-up Mewbourne, Aethon Energy (third again), Ascent Resources (down from second) and Hilcorp (up from sixth) in the top five.

Seven other Permian companies rank in the top 50 – Double Eagle at 25, Surge Operating at 27, Birch Operations at 28, BTA Oil Producers at 29, Fasken Oil & Ranch at 44, Blackbeard Operating at 47 and VTX Energy Operating at 49.

Shawn Stuart, principal analyst at Enverus, said June 25, “This year’s top 100 list reflects a private operator landscape that’s been shaped by the drastic consolidation of operators over the last two years.  The remaining privates are more geographically diverse than ever before, and new entrants are having to be opportunistic on acquisitions as core plays consolidate… A macro environment has created near-term headwinds for private companies to grow, but once things stabilize there is significant private capital that has been raised and is ready to hunt for new opportunities.”
