After a one-week reprieve, the count of active drilling rigs in U.S. resumed its decline last week. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of July 25 the U.S. count declined by 2 in the previous week to fall to 542. The U.S. count is down 8 percent or 47 rigs from 589 a year ago. It has fallen in 12 of the last 13 weeks.
The counts are also down in Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico. Baker Hughes said there were 260 rigs in Permian (down 3 from 263 last week, down 44 or 14 percent from 304 year ago), 249 in Texas (down 4 from 253 previous week, down 27 or 10 percent from 276 year ago) and 93 in New Mexico (down 1 from previous week, down 15 rigs or 14 percent from 108 year ago).
Baker Hughes’ last reports of additional rigs were Feb. 28 in Permian Basin and May 9 in Texas.
Lea County, N.M., is the new Permian leader with 44 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Eddy, N.M., with 42 (down 2). Others include Martin (down 1) and Reeves each with 23 rigs, Loving 21 (down 1), Midland 18, Upton 15, Reagan 12 and Glasscock 10.
Haynesville in Louisiana and east Texas moved past Eagle Ford in south Texas for runner-up among regions with 41 rigs (unchanged in past week) to 39 for Eagle Ford (down 2). Others include Williston with 31 and Marcellus with 24 (up 1). Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 42 ahead of Louisiana with 35 (up 2) and North Dakota with 29.
