It’s been 24 weeks since Permian Basin reported an increase in its count of active drilling rigs. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of Aug. 8 that there were 256 rigs in Permian Basin – a decline of 3 from last week and a decline of 48 or 16 percent since 304 a year ago. The last report of an increase was Feb. 28 (up 1 to 305).
Also, there were 243 rigs in Texas (down 2 from last week, down 33 or 12 percent from 276 a year ago), 95 in New Mexico (down 1 in past week, down 12 or 11 percent from 107 a year ago) and 539 in U.S. (down 1 in past week, down 49 or 8 percent from 588 a year ago).
Lea County, N.M., added at least 1 rig for the fifth straight week (up 1 to 50) to maintain its Permian lead followed by Eddy, N.M. (down 2 to 37). Other leaders were Midland with 24 (down 1), Loving and Reeves (down 1) with 21 each, Martin with 19, Upton with 15 (down 1), and Glasscock and Reagan with 11 each.
Oklahoma is third among states with 43 rigs (up 2 in past week) followed by Louisiana with 34 and North Dakota with 29. Haynesville remains No. 2 among regions with 41 (up 1) followed by Eagle Ford with 38 (down 1), Williston with 31 and Marcellus with 24.
