Drillers in Permian Basin added oil and gas rigs for the fourth straight week, according to the weekly report of May 29 by Baker Hughes. Permian now has 255 active rigs after adding 5 in the past week. It’s the most since August 2025, but down 23 or 8.27 percent from 278 rigs a year ago.
The U.S. count increased for the sixth straight week by adding 4 to reach 562 – only 1 rig below the count of 563 a year ago. U.S. has added 19 rigs since April 17. Also, there are 256 rigs in Texas (255 week ago, 266 year ago) and 98 in New Mexico (93 week ago, 91 year ago). Canada added 24 rigs in the past week and 50 in the past year to 162.
Haynesville is No. 2 among regions with 55 rigs (55 week ago, 33 year ago) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 44 (44 week ago, 43 year ago), Williston with 28 (28 week ago, 31 year ago) and Marcellus with 24 (24 week ago, 24 year ago). Among states, Oklahoma is No. 3 with 44 (45 week ago, 52 year ago) followed by Louisiana with 38 (39 week ago, 30 year ago) and North Dakota with 26 (26 week ago, 30 year ago).
