Counts of active oil and gas drilling rigs in U.S. and Texas increased for the seventh straight week and for the fifth straight week in Permian Basin. And the U.S. count of 563 is above the year-ago count for the first time in three years since May 2023. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of June 5 the U.S. added 1 rig in the past week, and the current count is 4 above the count of 559 a year ago.
There were 257 rigs in Permian Basin (up 2 in the past week, down 18 or 6.55 percent in the past year), 260 rigs in Texas (up 4 in the past week, down 4 in the past year) and 96 rigs in New Mexico (down 2 in past week, up 5 in past year). In the current streaks, Permian has gained 16 rigs (241 to 257), Texas has added 28 (232 to 260), and U.S. is up 20 (543 to 563).
Haynesville ranks second among regions with 55 rigs (unchanged in past week, up 20 in past year) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 44 (unchanged in past week, up 4 in past year), Williston with 28 (unchanged in past week, down 3 in past year) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged in past week and past year). Third among states is Oklahoma with 43 rigs (down 1 in past week, down 7 in past year) followed by Louisiana with 38 (unchanged in past week, up 7 in past year) and North Dakota with 26 (unchanged in past week, down 4 in past year).
