A public forum on proposals to treat and reuse oilfield produced water to help restore flows in the Pecos River is scheduled Friday, Oct. 2, at Iraan Civic Center. The forum will be conducted by Friends of the Pecos River and Texas Produced Water Consortium. Ranchers, landowners, hunters, government officials and other interested residents are expected to attend the event 9:30 a.m. to noon.
The forum will focus on whether treated produced water could be used to improve river flows, rangeland, and the regional water cycle along with environmental risks. Most produced water currently is handled as wastewater and injected into disposal wells.
Among the speakers will be Dr. Shane Walker, director of the consortium and professor at Texas Tech University; Joe Schuster, Pecos County judge; and Ira Yates, president of Friends of the Pecos River. The consortium was created by the Texas legislature in 2021.
