UPS said Wednesday it is buying the equivalent of 170 million gallons of renewable natural gas from California-based natural gas provider Clean Energy Fuel Corp. in the next seven years to fuel its delivery trucks in Texas and 12 other states. UPS will have fueling stations in El Paso, Fort Worth and San Antonio. UPS said it’s the largest commitment of any U.S. company to date to use renewable natural gas. The UPS intends to have 40 percent of its ground fleet running on alternative fuels by 2025.
GreenBiz said the deal “highlights how waste gas … is moving from a niche product into a more widely available zero-emission fuel source for private and public fleet operators.” Mike Casteel of UPS said the purchase represents about a quarter of the company’s annual natural gas usage.
