An annual report, “State of American Energy,” issued recently by American Petroleum Institute says concern about climate change “is at the heart of criticism of the energy industry.” Mike Sommers, president, said API members “will be at the forefront of the debate on the nation’s energy future… We have no choice. It’s required that we address climate change.” He told reporters the API Environmental Partnership is comprised of 70 companies dedicated to sharing best environmental practices.
Sommers said there has been a 14 percent decline in methane emissions since 1990 and a 50 percent increase in natural gas production. API supports legislation that would incentivize construction of more takeaway capacity to reduce flaring.
