Rig counts as of Sept. 4 in U.S., Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico remain above the 2020 low counts registered last month, according to the latest report from Baker Hughes. There were 256 rigs in U.S. (254 previous week, 2020 low of 244), 125 rigs in Permian Basin (125 previous week, 2020 low of 117), 106 rigs in Texas (107 previous week, 2020 low of 100) and 47 rigs in New Mexico (46 previous week, 2020 low of 45). A year ago there were 898 rigs in U.S., 427 in Permian Basin, 438 in Texas and 108 in New Mexico.
Rig counts in other leading states include 37 in Louisiana (34 previous week), 18 in Pennsylvania (unchanged) and 11 in Oklahoma (unchanged). Louisiana and New Mexico were the only major producing states to add rigs last week. Other leading regions include Haynesville with 36 rigs (35 previous week), Marcellus with 26 rigs (unchanged), and 9 rigs each in Eagle Ford and Williston.
Eddy County, N.M., idled 2 rigs in the past week but remains the Permian and national leader with 26. Other basin leaders include Lea, N.M., with 21 (up 3 in past week), Martin also with 21 (down 1 in past week), Midland with 12 and Loving with 10. Reeves County, basin leader with 85 rigs in November 2018, dropped to a decade low of 6 rigs in Baker Hughes’ report of Aug. 14.
