Permian Basin, Texas add rigs; New Mexico, U.S. report declines

Permian Basin and Texas posted small gains in the past week in Baker Hughes’ count of active oil and gas drilling rigs. As of July 30, there were 243 rigs in Permian Basin (242 week ago, 124 year ago) and 230 rigs in Texas (228 week ago, 104 year ago). Also, New Mexico lost a rig in the past week for a total of 74 (49 year ago), and U.S. lost 3 rigs in the past week for a total of 488 (251 year ago).

Permian’s leading counties, Lea (down 1 to 45) and Midland (down 4 to 28), lost rigs in the past week. Others include Eddy, N.M. (unchanged at 28), Reeves (down 1 to 27), Martin (up 3 to 26), Howard (up 3 to 17), Loving (unchanged at 15) and Upton (up 1 to 14).

Louisiana remains No. 3 among states with 48 rigs as of July 30 (down 4 in past week) followed by Oklahoma with 30 rigs (unchanged) and North Dakota and Pennsylvania with 19 rigs each. Haynesville remains No. 2 among regions with 47 rigs (down 1 in past week) followed by Eagle Ford with 32 (unchanged), Marcellus with 29 (up 1) and Williston with 19 (up 1). Eleven states and eight regions have at least 10 rigs.
