New Mexico added another drilling rig in the past week, according to Baker Hughes, to reach 80 active oil and gas rigs for the first time since April 2020. There were 47 rigs in New Mexico a year ago. Baker Hughes said as of Aug. 20 also there were 231 rigs in Texas (232 week ago, 108 year ago), 247 rigs in Permian Basin (245 week ago, 127 year ago) and 503 rigs in U.S. (500 week ago, 254 year ago). U.S. reached 500 last week for the first time since April 2020.
Ten states have at least 10 active rigs, including 49 in Louisiana (47 week ago, 32 year ago), 30 in Oklahoma (30 week ago, 11 year ago) and 22 in North Dakota (21 week ago, 10 year ago). Haynesville remains No. 2 among regions with 45 rigs (46 week ago, 32 year ago) followed by Eagle Ford with 35 rigs (36 week ago, 9 year ago), Marcellus with 28 rigs (29 week ago, 26 year ago) and Williston with 23 rigs (23 week ago, 10 year ago).
Permian Basin leaders include Lea County, N.M., with 47 rigs (up 1 in past week), Eddy, N.M., with 31 rigs (unchanged), Midland and Martin counties each with 27 rigs, Reeves with 22 rigs, and Howard, Loving and Upton each with 16 rigs.
