Irving-based major ExxonMobil said Tuesday it has reached agreement with independent, non-profit MiQ to begin certification process for natural gas produced at its facilities at Poker Lake in northern Delaware Basin in New Mexico. Certified natural gas, sometimes referred to as responsibly sourced gas (RSG), validates emissions reduction efforts and helps customers meet emissions goals. About 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from Poker Lake will be assessed, certified and available to customers by 2021Q4. ExxonMobil is considering expanding certification to include other Permian Basin fields and shale production areas, including Appalachhia and Haynesville.
Bart Cahir, senior vice president, said, “We are reducing methane emissions responsibly and economically. By working with MiQ, we can provide our customers with credible third-party validation of those efforts.” Georges Tijbosch of MiQ added, “These steps and the rapid reduction of methane emissions (are) critical to the world achieving its climate goals.”
