New Mexico led major producing states with the addition of 5 oil and gas drilling rigs in the past week, according to a weekly report Dec. 3 from Baker Hughes. New Mexico has 88 active rigs – up 47 percent from a 2021 low of 60 in March. Baker Hughes said there also are 283 rigs in Permian Basin (up 3 in past week, up 119 in past year), 271 in Texas (down 2 in past week, up 122 in past year) and 569 in U.S. (unchanged in past week, up 246 in past year).
Lea County, N.M., grew its rig count to 60 to lead the basin followed by Midland (30), Eddy, N.M. (26), Reeves (22) and Howard (19). Haynesville remained No. 2 among regions with 46 rigs followed by Eagle Ford (42), Marcellus (30) and Williston (27). Louisiana remains No. 3 among states with 47 rigs followed by Oklahoma (44) and North Dakota (27).
