Permian Basin and Texas each declined in rig count for the second straight week, according to the year’s first report of active drilling rigs by Baker Hughes. As of Jan. 7 there were 292 rigs in Permian (293 week ago, 179 year ago), 274 in Texas (277 week ago, 161 year ago), 95 in New Mexico (94 week ago, 69 year ago) and 588 in U.S. (586 week ago, 360 year ago). Louisiana led major producing states with a gain of 3 rigs to 52 (43 year ago). Only other states to add rigs were New Mexico and Wyoming.
Oklahoma is No. 4 among states with 49 rigs followed by North Dakota with 27. And Haynesville is No. 2 among regions with 49 rigs followed by Eagle Ford with 44 (44 week ago, 26 year ago), Williston with 27 and Cana Woodford with 26.
Lea County, N.M., starts the year in its familiar spot atop the Permian count with 54 rigs followed by Eddy, N.M., with 37, Midland with 30, Martin with 23 and Reeves with 22.
