Atlas Energy Solutions received the Bruno Hanson Midland College Environmental Excellence Award recently for its 42-mile conveyor system that carries sand for hydraulic fracturing. The award was announced last week at the Permian Basin environmental regulatory seminar. The conveyor system, Dune Express, carries frac sand from Atlas’ Kermit facility to its loadout facility in Lea County, N.M.
Gretchen Bakke, Hanson’s daughter, told Midland Reporter Telegram, “This award recognizes outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability, innovation and promotion of eco-friendly practices… Through innovative solutions, tireless advocacy and sustainable practices, the Dune Express has set an exemplary standard in the field of environmental stewardship.”
Kyle Turlington, Atlas Energy vice president, said Dune Express has saved more than one million truck miles for sand delivery since startup Jan. 12. Stephen Robertson, executive vice president of Permian Basin Petroleum Association, added, “By adapting conveyor technology … Atlas has significantly reduced truck traffic on public roads in Permian Basin. This not only minimizes environmental disruption but also enhances safety and efficiency.”
