Baker Hughes: Reeves, Lea share Permian lead with 57 drilling rigs each

Reeves County now shares the Permian Basin lead in active oil and gas drilling rigs with Lea, N.M., with 57 units each, according to the Aug. 16 report from Baker Hughes. In the past week, Reeves lost 5 rigs, and Lea added a rig. Midland (up 2 in past week) and Eddy, N.M., each has 49 rigs. Other basin leaders include Martin with 35 (up 1 in past week), Loving with 33 (up 2), Howard with 26 (down 2), Pecos with 22 (down 2) and Ward also with 22 (up 1).
There were 441 rigs in Permian Basin as of Aug. 16, according to Baker Hughes, compared to 444 a week ago and 486 a year ago. Texas had 450 rigs (454 last week, 525 a year ago), New Mexico had 111 rigs (109 a week ago, 104 a year ago), and U.S. had 935 rigs (934 a week ago, 1,057 a year ago). New Mexico’s count is near its 2019 high of 112 in January and February.
Rig counts in other leading states as of Aug. 16 include Oklahoma with 85 (86 last week, 140 last year), Louisiana with 62 (59 last week, 61 last year) and North Dakota with 48 (47 last week, 56 last year). And in other leading regions, there were 67 rigs in Eagle Ford (66 last week, 79 last year), 56 in Marcellus (56 last week, 53 last year), 50 in Haynesville (50 last week, 48 last year), 48 in Williston (47 last week, 56 last year) and 46 in Cana Woodford (45 last week, 65 last year).
