Baker Hughes said Friday that the U.S. rig count declined by 17 in the previous week – its biggest decline since June 2020 – to 731. That included a decline of 16 gas rigs. Also as of May 12, there were 353 rigs in Permian (356 previous week, 335 year ago), 366 in Texas (368 previous week, 345 year ago) and 108 in New Mexico (107 previous week, 98 year ago). No major producing region reported an increase last week.
Eagle Ford was No. 2 among regions with 62 rigs (down 2 in past week) followed by Haynesville with 57 (down 5), Marcellus with 39 and Williston with 32. Louisiana was No. 3 among states with 57 (down 4) followed by Oklahoma with 51 (down 3) and North Dakota with 37.
Lea County, N.M., is the new Permian leader with 54 rigs after adding 5 in the past week. Eddy is now runner-up with 53 rigs after a decline of 3 in the past week. Other leaders include Reeves with 43 (down 1), Martin with 42 (up 1), Midland with 33 (up 1) and Loving with 26 (unchanged). Eleven Permian counties have at least 10 rigs.
