Lance Tolar: “It’s very interesting. Our industry has shifted over the past few years to managed I.T. Before, you would have a break-it-fix-it model. You would call your I.T. company when a device failed. They would come and fix it – that break-fix model. Our industry has shifted to “managed services,” managed I.T. In that model, we have a service contract and provide your consulting and provide your I.T. on an outsourced basis. We operate as an in-house I.T. company, but we’re outsourced. Depending on the size of the organization, we may place dedicated people in-house.
“It’s a wiser investment to outsource to I.T. companies that know how to do it well than it is to keep it in-house. Managed service providers [MSPs] provide predictable performance and expenses. It allows oil companies to focus on their core, which is to produce oil and gas products. It makes more sense for a company to outsource than to have it in-house and more companies are outsourcing their I.T. as they realize the benefits. Just like they outsource their marketing and payroll, they now outsource their I.T.”
