Consumption of natural gas in the U.S. is forecast to increase this year by about 1 percent to a record of 91.4 billion cubic feet per day. U.S. Energy Information Administration said Aug. 25 it expects use of natural gas to increase across all sectors except electric power. “Natural gas consumption was high in the beginning of the year,” EIA said, “driving our forecast.”
Consumption in both January and February set records – 126.8 Bcfd in January and 115.9 Bcfd in February. U.S. natural gas consumption typically peaks in January and February when demand for space heating in the residential and commercial sectors is greatest. U.S. Census Bureau said 45 percent of homes use natural gas as their primary heating fuel.
