Count of drilling rigs declines for third straight week in Permian Basin

Count of active drilling rigs decreased for the third straight week in Permian Basin, according to the weekly report of March 21 from Baker Hughes.  There were 300 rigs in Permian Basin – down 1 from 301 the previous week and down 15 from 315 year ago.  Also as of March 21, there were 280 rigs in Texas (down 1 in past week, down 14 in past year), 102 in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, down 4 in past year) and 593 in U.S. (up 1 in past week, down 31 in past year).

Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 53 (up 2 in past week, up 9 in past year) followed by North Dakota with 32 (unchanged in past week, unchanged in past year) and Louisiana with 30 (up 1 in past week, down 14 in past year).  Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 48 rigs (unchanged in past week, down 7 in past year) followed by Williston with 33 (down 1 in past week, down 1 in past year), Haynesville with 29 (unchanged in past week, down 7 in past year) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged in past year, down 7 in past year).

Eddy County, N.M., added 3 rigs to remain the Permian leader with 52 rigs after Lea, N.M., lost 3 to stand second with 47 rigs.  Other leaders include Martin with 28, Midland with 27, Reeves with 22 (down 4 in past week), Loving with 19, Upton with 15, Reagan with 13 (down 1), Ward with 12 (up 1) and Howard with 10.
