Counts of active drilling rigs in Permian Basin, Texas and U.S. declined in the past week, according to the weekly report of March 7 by Baker Hughes. The U.S. count of 592 – down 1 in the past week, down 30 in the past year – ends a streak of five straight weeks of additional rigs. Also, there were 304 rigs in Permian Basin (down from 305 previous week, down from 313 year ago) and 281 in Texas (down from 282 previous week, down from 291 year ago). New Mexico again reported 105 rigs (106 year ago).
Eddy and Lea counties in New Mexico continue to report 51 rigs to lead Permian Basin followed by Martin with 29 (up 2 in past week), Midland with 26 (down 1) and Reeves also with 26. Others include Loving with 19 rigs, Upton with 15 (up 1), Reagan with 14, Ward with 11 and Howard with 10.
Eagle Ford in south Texas added 1 rig to remain No. 2 among regions with 49 rigs (52 year ago) followed by Williston with 33, Haynesville with 29 (down 2) and Marcellus with 24. Trailing Texas and New Mexico among states are Oklahoma with 49, North Dakota with 32 and Louisiana with 29 – each unchanged in past week.
