Declining count of drilling rigs in Texas reached its eighth straight week in Baker Hughes’ report of Aug. 22. Counts in Permian Basin and New Mexico were unchanged in the past week. Texas reported 240 rigs – down 2 for the past week and down 34 or 12 percent from 274 a year ago. There are 255 rigs in Permian Basin (down 51 or 17 percent from 306 a year ago) and 95 in New Mexico (down 11 in past year from 106).
Baker Hughes said there are 538 rigs in U.S. (411 seeking oil) – down 1 in past week and down 47 or 8 percent from 585 a year ago.
Haynesville kept its narrow lead for runner-up among regions with 40 rigs (unchanged) ahead of Eagle Ford in south Texas with 39 (unchanged), Williston with 30 (down 1) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged). Third among states is Oklahoma with 43 (unchanged) followed by Louisiana with 38 (up 2) and North Dakota with 28 (down 1).
Lea (up 1 to 51) and Eddy (down 1 to 36) counties in New Mexico continue to lead Permian Basin. Others include Midland and Loving with 21 each, Martin with 19 (up 2), Upton with 15 and Reagan with 12.
