Counts of active oil and gas drilling rigs declined in the past week in Permian Basin, Texas and U.S. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of March 27 there were 543 rigs in U.S. – down 9 in the past week and down 49 or 8.28 percent from 592 of a year ago. The count has fallen in the past two weeks from a 2026 high of 553 rigs after starting the year with 545 rigs.
Also as of March 27, there were 241 rigs in Permian Basin (down 2 in the past week and down 56 or 18.86 percent from 297 of a year ago) and 231 rigs in Texas (down 2 in the past week and down 49 or 17.50 percent from 280 a year ago). The count in New Mexico was unchanged at 102 (up 1 in the past year).
Haynesville is No. 2 among regions with 55 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 42 (unchanged), Williston with 30 (up 1) and Marcellus with 25 (down 2). Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 44 rigs (down 2) followed by Louisiana with 39 (down 1) and North Dakota with 28 (up 1).
