New maps and geologic information for Bone Spring in the Delaware Basin have been released by U.S. Energy Information Administration. Stonnie Pollock, president of the West Texas Geological Society, told the Midland Reporter Telegram that the information “appears to be more generalized information pulled together from public information sources.” EIA reportedly reviewed data from 22,000 wells; the information includes formation geology, deposition history and regional tectonic features. Pollock is senior geologist at Fasken Oil and Ranch.
Hydrocarbon production has increased in Bone Spring after the introduction of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. The Reporter Telegram said there were 436 producing wells in Bone Spring in January 2005 and 4,338 wells in mid-2019, and average initial daily crude oil production per well increased from 67 b/d in 2005 to 770 b/d in 2019.
