U.S. Energy Information Administration said recently the nation exported about 30 percent of its domestic primary energy production. Of the record 103 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) of total primary energy production in the U.S. in 2024, a record 31 quads went to other countries. The percentage has grown considerably in recent decades, according to data reported Aug. 12 in EIA’s Monthly Energy Review. Nearly all the exports were fossil fuels destined for other countries in North America, Europe or Asia.
In 2024 the U.S. exported 55 percent of its domestic crude oil and natural gas plant liquids production either directly as crude oil or as processed petroleum products such as propane, distillate fuel oil and motor gasoline. And in 2024 U.S. exported about 20 percent of its dry natural gas production.
Mexico was top destination of both crude oil and petroleum products (11 percent) and natural gas (31 percent). Exports of oil and petroleum products also went to Netherlands (10 percent) and China and Canada (8 percent each). And exports of natural gas also went to Canada (13 percent) and Netherlands (6 percent).
