Eleven Houston energy and chemical companies said Sept. 16 they plan to create a large carbon storage complex in the Houston area to serve the region’s industrial and petrochemical sectors. ExxonMobil, Chevron, Dow Chemical and eight other companies said they will develop a storage site or sites capable of storing up to 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year by 2030 and 100 million metric tons by 2040.
Houston mayor Sylvester Turner said, “It’s exciting to see so many companies have already come together to talk about making Houston the world leader in carbon capture and storage.” The other companies are chemical companies INEOS, Linde and LyondellBasell, refiners Marathon, Phillips 66 and Valero, and power companies Calpine and NRG Energy. Final investment decisions will depend on government incentives for carbon capture and storage.
