Give Our Regards

March 5, 2014 by PBOG

Broadway beckons, barbecue beguiles, and firestarters flicker.

WHERE TO EAT:

West Texas barbecue is a wonderous thing. Barbecue served straight out of the pit is even better. If you’ve got a hankering for slow-cooked meat in hefty quantities, KD’s Barbecue on Garden City Highway and Interstate 20 is the answer. Come on in and grab a tray and some butcher paper and belly up to the barbecue pit. There are no plates, because, face it, plates are for wimps. This is heavy duty barbecue, and heavy duty barbecue needs heavy duty conveyance to the table. Generous slabs of meat are cut to your specification, of many varieties…. ribs, brisket, chicken, turkey, sausage, and more. You’ve got to get at least one roasted jalapeno. Put some potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and cobbler on the side, and you’re in barbecue heaven. KD’s is a fun place to eat, too. The open, airy restaurant’s walls are covered in oilfield and Old West memorabilia. It’s just as much fun to read the signs and sayings on the walls as it is to eat the fantastic barbecue. Between the open pit and the bean bar, KD’s is just the right mix of rustic, eclectic, and delicious.

WHO TO SEE:

Exciting, impressive, touching, entertaining, fresh, fun, and funny are just some of the things people are saying about Back on Broadway, a show set to take the stage at the sumptuous Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center this March 13 at 7 p.m. Following in the fancy footsteps of its critically acclaimed predecessor, On Broadway, this all-new show from Matt Davenport Productions delivers an exciting evening of non-stop show stoppers. The multi-talented cast of ten brings to life the most popular scenes and songs from the new Broadway classics as they learn “How to Succeed on Broadway.” Dazzling costumes, colorful and quirky scenery, and an orchestral sound enhance the showmanship of the triple-threat performers in their full production numbers from shows like The Producers, Ragtime, Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, Avenue Q, Jersey Boys 9 to 5, The Addams Family, Mama Mia and more. The Wagner Noel is located at 1310 North FM 1788 in Midland. Visit wagnernoel.com for details.

WHAT TO GET:

Just because you learned how to start a fire from scratch in wilderness class doesn’t mean you are going to successfully start one the next time you try. That’s why the Zippo Emergency Fire Starter Kit is an essential carry-along. Shaped like a regular lighter, the kit lets you start a flame in a jiffy. Pop the lid open and pull out a water-resistant, waxed tinder stick, which you can light with the flint wheel ignition right next to it. One spin is all it should take. The orange-colored, compact case features rugged metal construction and a water-resistant O-ring seal to keep the contents dry at all times. For only $19.95, it’s a cheap price to pay for warmth and security. Find it at coolthings.com/zippo-emergency-fire-starter.
