The inventory of proposed gas power plants in Texas as reported Wednesday by Environmental Integrity Project includes multiple plants in Permian Basin.
The new plants and expansions are planned for Odessa in Ector County, Seminole in Gaines County, Abernathy in Hale County, Westbrook in Mitchell County, Fort Stockton in Pecos County, Pecos in Reeves County, Abilene in Taylor County, and Barstow and Monahans in Ward County.
During Texas legislative sessions of 2023 and 2025, lawmakers provided a total of $10 billion in public financing of low-cost loans for new gas plants, according to The Texas Tribune. No taxpayer funds were designated to encourage wind or solar farms.
Jenny Martos of Global Energy Monitor, California-based nonprofit, said the volume of additional gas projects in Texas “is indeed astonishing.”
Texas already is the largest electricity provider in the U.S. – generating 563 million megawatt hours of electricity in 2024 to far outpace runner-up Florida.
