Lea County in New Mexico added 6 rigs in the last week to reach 71 active drilling rigs – more than any U.S. state other than Texas and New Mexico. Also as of Sept. 23, Baker Hughes said there were 344 rigs in Permian Basin (up 1 in past week, up 84 in past year), 362 in Texas (down 2 in past week, up 120 in past year), 111 in New Mexico (up 3 in past week, up 27 in past year) and 764 in U.S. (up 1 in past week, up 243 in past year). New Mexico’s count is 1 below its 2022 high.
Rig counts in other leading counties in Permian include 37 in Eddy, N.M. (down 3 in past week), 35 in Martin (unchanged), 31 in Midland (down 1), 22 each in Reeves (down 2) and Loving (unchanged), and 20 in Howard (down 1).
Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 66 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Oklahoma with 65 (up 1) and North Dakota with 37 (down 1). Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 72 rigs (unchanged in past week) followed by Haynesville with 71 (unchanged), Williston with 39 (down 1) and Marcellus with 36 (up 1).
