U.S., Texas and Permian Basin reported declining counts of active drilling rigs for the past week, but New Mexico added 3 rigs for a 2024 new high of 106. Houston-based Baker Hughes said as of March 8 there were 313 rigs in Permian Basin (315 previous week, 343 year ago), 291 in Texas (299 week ago, 366 year ago) and 622 in U.S. (629 week ago, 746 year ago). New Mexico also is up 3 rigs from its count of 613 a year ago.
Oklahoma is third among states with 45 rigs (45 previous week, 61 year ago) followed by Louisiana with 43 (45 week ago, 59 year ago) and North Dakota with 32 (32 week ago, 41 year ago). Eagle Ford in south Texas remains No. 2 among regions with 52 rigs (52 previous week, 72 year ago) followed by Haynesville with 38 (41 previous week, 67 year ago), Williston with 34 (34 previous week, 42 year ago) and Marcellus with 32 (32 previous week, 35 year ago).
Eddy County, N.M., added 4 rigs in the past week to maintain its Permian lead with 57 followed by Lea, N.M., with 46 (down 1), Martin with 36 (unchanged), Loving with 24 (unchanged) and Reeves with 23 (down 2). Midland continued adding rigs – up 1 this week to 20 – followed by Upton with 19 (down 1), Reagan with 13 (up 1), Ward also with 13 (down 1), and Culberson and Howard each with 11.
