New drilling activity is returning to Permian Basin. Baker Hughes’ count of active oil and gas drilling rigs in New Mexico reached at least 100 in the June 10 report for the first time in 26 months (since April 2020). There are 103 rigs in New Mexico – up 3 in the past week and up 28 in the past year. There are 345 rigs in Permian Basin (up 3 in past week, up 109 in past year), 356 in Texas (down 1 in past week, up 137 in past year) and 733 in U.S. (up 6 in past week, up 272 in past year). Permian and Eagle Ford were only regions to add rigs in the past week.
Eddy (53 rigs) and Lea (47) counties in New Mexico each added 3 rigs in the past week to top the Permian Basin. Other leaders include Midland with 42 (up 1 in past week), Reeves with 33 (down 1), Martin with 31 (down 2), Loving with 29 (down 2) and Howard with 20 (unchanged).
Louisiana remains No. 3 among states with 62 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Oklahoma with 59 (unchanged) and North Dakota with 35 (unchanged). Eagle Ford (up 2 in past week) and Haynesville (unchanged) each has 68 active drilling rigs. Other major basins include Marcellus with 39 and Williston with 38 (each unchanged).
