No new drilling rigs in Permian in past week, Texas count down 3 to 229

February 17, 2026 by PBOG

Count of active drilling rigs in U.S. was unchanged in the past week after the addition of 3 gas-directed rigs and the loss of 3 oil-directed rigs left the total count at 551 active rigs for the second week in a row.  Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of Feb. 13 the count declined by 37 rigs or 6.3 percent from 588 in the past year.

Count in the Permian Basin fell by another 3 rigs in the past week to 238 (and by 66 or 21.7 percent in the past year from 304).  In Baker Hughes’ seven weekly reports of 2026, Permian reported no gains (declined in rig count four times and unchanged three times).  Permian started the year with 247 active drilling rigs.

Also as of Feb. 13, there were 229 rigs in Texas (down 3 in the past week, down 51 or 18.2 percent in the past year from 280) and 102 in New Mexico (up 1 in past week, down 4 in past year).

Oklahoma is third among states in rig count with 45 (down 1 in past week, up 1 in past year) followed by Louisiana with 41 (up 2 in past week, up 11 in past year) and North Dakota with 26 (down 1 in past week, down 6 in past year).  And among regions, Haynesville continues to decisively lead Eagle Ford, 52 rigs to 40, followed by Williston with 28 and Marcellus with 26.  Only Haynesville (up 3), Marcellus and Williston added rigs last week.
