1PointFive, subsidiary of Houston-based Occidental Petroleum, leased more than 55,000 acres along the Gulf Coast in Texas to develop a carbon capture and sequestration hub in Chambers, Jefferson and Liberty counties. The Bluebonnet hub, with capacity of about 1.2 billion metric tons of CO2, will be located near refineries, chemical plants and manufacturing facilities between Houston and Beaumont. Startup is expected in 2026.
Oxy said 1PointFive drilled a test well and conducted subsurface assessment to characterize the site’s ability to securely store CO2. 1PointFive and a subsidiary of Enterprise Products Partners also are developing a transportation solution to gather CO2 from regional emitters and deliver to Bluebonnet. Jeff Alvarez, president of 1PointFive Sequestration, said March 2, “We are progressing our plans to build sequestration hubs that will provide a solution for carbon intensive industries to help reduce their emissions.”
