Percentage of gas-fired generation of electricity flattens while wind, solar increase

October 31, 2025 by PBOG Leave a Comment

U.S. Energy Information Agency reported last week that wind and solar generation – especially utility scale solar – have been the fastest growing sources of electricity since 2023 for ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas).  Electricity demand on ERCOT has steadily increased since 2021, and ERCOT had the fastest electricity demand growth among U.S. electricity grids between 2024 and 2025.  In the first nine months of 2025, electricity demand for ERCOT reached a record high.

EIA said wind and solar generation are increasingly meeting rising demand on ERCOT.  Together wind and solar met 36 percent of ERCOT’s electricity demand in the first nine months of 2025.  Natural gas-fired generation also increased after 2021, but more recently it flattened.  Although it is still the largest source of electricity for ERCOT, natural gas fired generation averaged 43 percent in the first nine months of 2025 compared with 47 percent in the first nine months of 2023 and 2024.

ERCOT’s electricity demand is forecast to grow faster than that of any other grid operator in the U.S. through at least 2026.  It manages about 90 percent of Texas’ load.
