Permian Basin added a drilling rig last week, according to the weekly report of Oct. 17 from Baker Hughes, for the first time since Feb. 28. That ends a streak of 32 weeks of flat or declining rig count in the basin; the count fell from 305 to 250 during that time. Baker Hughes said there are 251 rigs in Permian Basin (up from 250 last week, down 17.4 percent from 304 a year ago).
Also as of Oct. 17, there were 237 rigs in Texas (down from 238 previous week, down 46 or 16.3 percent from 283 of a year ago) and 102 in New Mexico (up 2 in previous week and up 3 from a year ago). The U.S. count was also up 1 in past week to 548 but down 37 or 6.3 percent from 585 a year ago.
Eagle Ford Shale in south Texas remains No. 2 among regions with 44 rigs (unchanged from last week, down 5 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 41 (41 week ago, 33 year ago), Williston with 30 (30 week ago, 34 year ago) and Marcellus with 23 (23 week ago, 23 year ago). Third among states is Oklahoma with 42 rigs (40 week ago, 42 year ago), Louisiana with 37 rigs (39 week ago, 38 year ago) and North Dakota with 28 (28 week ago, 33 year ago).
