Permian Basin adds rigs for fifth time in last six weeks

Permian Basin added drilling rigs for the third straight week and for the fifth time in the last six weeks, according to the weekly report of April 21 from Baker Hughes.  Permian has 358 rigs after adding 2 in the past week (334 a year ago).  Also as of April 21, there were 377 rigs in Texas (375 week ago, 346 year ago), 105 in New Mexico (104 week ago, 95 year ago) and 753 in U.S. (748 week ago, 695 year ago).  Permian, Texas and New Mexico have added rigs this year, but U.S. is down to 753 from 779 to start 2023.

Louisiana (unchanged in the past week) is third among states with 57 rigs followed by Oklahoma with 56 (up 1) and North Dakota with 40 (unchanged).  Eagle Ford is runner-up among regions with 68 (unchanged) followed by Haynesville with 64 (unchanged) and Williston (unchanged) and Marcellus (unchanged) each with 41.

Eddy County, N.M., leads Permian with 54 rigs (down 1 in past week) followed by Lea, N.M., with 49 (up 1) and Reeves with 46 (up 3).  Others include Martin with 40 (down 1), Midland with 38 (up 2), Loving with 25 (down 2), and Howard (down 1) and Upton (down 1) each with 18.  Reagan has 11, and Andrews and Ward have 10 each to give the basin 11 counties this week with at least 10 rigs.
