Counts of active drilling rigs in Permian Basin and Texas continue to decline, according to the weekly report of Oct. 3 from Baker Hughes. Permian Basin reported 251 rigs (down 2 from 253 last week, down 53 or 17.4 percent from 304 a year ago), and Texas also declined 2 to 244 (down 35 or 12.5 percent from 279 a year ago). The count in Permian Basin has been flat or declined for 31 consecutive weeks since February.
New Mexico added 1 rig to 96 (down 5 from 101 a year ago), and the U.S. count was unchanged at 549 (down 36 or 6.2 percent from 585 a year ago).
Oklahoma remained No. 3 among states with 43 rigs (up 1 in past week, up 3 in past year) followed by Louisiana with 38 (up 1 in past week, down 2 in past year) and North Dakota with 27 (unchanged in past week, down 6 in past year). Eagle Ford Shale in south Texas held its spot as No. 2 among regions with 45 rigs (45 week ago, 48 year ago) followed by Haynesville with 39 (39 week ago, 34 year ago), Williston with 29 (29 week ago, 34 year ago) and Marcellus with 23 (24 week ago, 25 year ago).
