Permian Basin losing streak of active drilling rigs extends to five weeks

April 8, 2025 by PBOG

Permian Basin extended its losing streak to five weeks in Baker Hughes’ latest weekly drilling rig report.  As of April 4, there were 294 active rigs in Permian Basin (down 3 from 297 previous week, down 23 from 317 year ago).  The high count for Permian this year was 305 as of Feb. 28 after which the current streak started.

Also as of April 4, there were 277 rigs in Texas (down from 280 last week, down from 297 year ago), 101 in New Mexico (101 last week, 108 year ago) and 590 in U.S. (592 last week, 620 year ago).

Eagle Ford in south Texas remains No. 2 among regions with 48 (unchanged in past week) followed by Williston with 33, Haynesville with 30 and Marcellus with 25 (up 2).  Oklahoma still is No. 3 among states with 53 rigs followed by North Dakota with 32 and Louisiana with 30 – all three unchanged in past week.

Eddy (51 rigs) and Lea (47) counties in New Mexico remain the Permian leaders.  Other leaders include Martin with 27 (up 1), Midland with 26 (down 2), Reeves with 22, Loving with 19 (down 1) and Upton with 16 (up 1).  Also, Reagan has 12, Ward 11 (down 1), and Howard and Winkler 10 each.
