Permian Basin produced 22 percent of natural gas in U.S. in 2024

April 29, 2025 by PBOG Leave a Comment

U.S. marketed natural gas production remained relatively flat in 2024, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration, and grew by less than 0.4 billion cubic feet per day compared to 2023.  Production averaged 113 Bcfd, according to EIA’s latest Natural Gas Monthly.  Production growth in Permian Basin was offset by declining production in Haynesville and flat production in Appalachia.  Appalachia, Permian and Haynesville produce about two-thirds of U.S. natural gas output.

In 2024 more natural gas was produced in Appalachia than any other region – 31 percent of the U.S. total or 35.6 Bcfd of marketed natural gas production.  Production growth in Appalachia has been slowing in recent years because of limited pipeline takeaway capacity.  Production grew by 0.1 percent in 2024 (0.50 million cfd) and 0.9 Bcfd in 2023.

Permian accounted for 22 percent of marketed natural gas production in U.S. in 2024 and almost all the growth.  Production grew in 2024 by 12 percent (2.7 Bcfd) to 25.4 Bcfd.  In the Permian region, growth in production is primarily the result of associated gas produced during oil production.

Haynesville averaged 14.6 Bcfd in 2024 – 11 percent less than 2023.
