Baker Hughes reported in its final weekly report of 2024 there were 304 active drilling rigs in Permian Basin for the fourth straight week. As of Dec. 27, there were 284 rigs in Texas (down 1 in past week, down 25 in past year), 103 in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, up 6 in past year) and 589 in U.S. (unchanged in past week, down 33 in past year). The Permian count is down 5 in the past year.
Eagle Ford in south Texas finished the year as the No. 2 region with 45 rigs (down 1 in past week, down 8 in past year) followed by Williston with 37 (up 1 in past week, up 5 in past year), Haynesville with 31 (unchanged in past week, down 13 in past year) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged in past week, down 4 in past year). Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 43 rigs (unchanged in past week, down 1 in past year) followed by North Dakota with 36 (up 1 in previous week, up 5 in previous year) and Louisiana with 31 (unchanged in past week, down 11 in past year).
Eddy (54 rigs) and Lea (down 1 to 46) in New Mexico remain the top counties in Permian Basin. Others include Midland with 30 rigs, Reeves with 28, Martin with 27 and Loving with 21 – all unchanged in past week. Also, Upton has 13 rigs and Reagan 11.
