Permian Basin, Texas add drilling rigs in past week while U.S. count declines

September 24, 2024 by PBOG

The counts of drilling rigs in Permian Basin and Texas increased in the past week despite a decline for the fifth time in the last six weeks in U.S.  Baker Hughes said as of Sept. 20 there were 307 rigs in Permian Basin (up 1 from 306 week ago, down 10 from 317 year ago) and 276 in Texas (up 2 from 274 week ago, down 36 from 312 year ago).  Also, there were 106 rigs in New Mexico (down 1 in past week, up 6 in past year) and 588 in U.S. (down 2 in past week, down 42 in past year).

Texas was the only major producing state, and Permian was the only major producing region to add rigs last week.  Eagle Ford remains No. 2 among regions with 48 (unchanged in past week, down 1 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 33 (unchanged in past week, down 6 in past year), Williston with 34 and Marcellus with 24.  Louisiana (42) and Oklahoma (41) continue to rank in the top five among states ahead of North Dakota (33).

New Mexico counties Lea (down 1 to 52) and Eddy (50) again lead the Permian Basin in rig count as of Sept. 20 followed by Martin (32), Reeves (29) and Midland (up 1 to 24).  Others include Loving with 19, Reagan and Upton with 14 each, and Howard up 1 to 10.
