Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico added rigs in the past week in Baker Hughes’ count of active oil and gas drilling rigs. Permian Basin and New Mexico remain above their counts at the end of 2019. As of Feb. 14, Permian Basin had 408 rigs (405 previous week, 473 previous year, 405 to start 2020). Texas had 397 rigs (394 previous week, 509 previous year, 404 to start 2020), and New Mexico had 113 rigs (112 previous week, 109 previous year, 105 to start 2020). There were 790 rigs in U.S. (unchanged in past week, 1,051 a year ago). Texas and New Mexico were the only major producing states to add rigs in the past week.
Eddy County, N.M., added 2 rigs in the past week to lead Permian Basin with 59 as of Feb. 14. Lea, N.M., is runner-up with 53 (down 1 in past week) followed by Midland (up 1) with 44 and Reeves (unchanged) with 40. Other basin leaders include Martin with 38, Loving with 32, Howard with 30 and Ward with 20.
According to Baker Hughes, as of Feb. 14, rig counts in other leading states were Louisiana and North Dakota with 52 each and Oklahoma with 50 (each unchanged in previous week. Other leading regions include Eagle Ford with 70, Williston with 53 and Haynesville with 41 (each unchanged in last week).
