Permian down 1, Texas down 6 in rig count year-to-date

February 17, 2023 by PBOG

Rig counts in Permian Basin and Texas declined for the second straight week, according to Baker Hughes in its weekly report of Feb. 10.  Permian Basin’s count fell by 2 in the past week to 352 (353 to start 2023), and the count in Texas was down 7 in the past week to 370 (376 to start 2023).  Also as of Feb. 10, there were 109 rigs in New Mexico (105 a week ago, 102 to start 2023) and 761 in U.S. (759 a week ago, 779 to start 2023).

In Permian Basin, Lea County, N.M., declined by 4 rigs to 61, but remains the basin leader.  Eddy, N.M., added 7 rigs to reach 45 followed by Martin with 39 rigs (down 2 in past week), Reeves with 33 (unchanged), Loving and Midland each with 28, and Howard with 22.  Midland’s gain of 2 reversed a four-week decline.

Louisiana added 6 rigs in the past week to rank third among states with 66 followed by Oklahoma with 63 (down 1) and North Dakota with 41 (unchanged).  Eagle Ford (down 1 to 71) and Haynesville (up 1 to 70) trail Permian among regions followed by Williston with 42 (flat) and Marcellus with 36 (down 1).
